Christian Youth Theater (CYT) is the largest after-school theater arts training program in the nation. Affiliates across the country offer classes in drama, music, dance, technical theater, and more! Each local program offers camps and classes for ages 4-18, and full-scale productions for ages 8-18.

Act 1: Ages 4 through 1st grade

 Our Gang: The Sound of Music
Musical Theatre

Join the Von Trapp Family and have wonderful time learning about acting, singing and movement. The “Our Gang” class is the perfect class for those budding performers who want to learn to take the stage. This class will encourage students to explore performing arts through improv games, challenging their creativity and providing a safe environment to come out of their shell and gain confidence. This encouraging environment allows students to grow individually and participate as a team. They will learn songs from this classic story and enjoy fun movement! (This class is not eligible to audition for our main-stage show, but they will perform in an end of session showcase.)

Act 1:  Second grade – fifth grade

Matilda
Musical Theatre
Teacher:  Anna Kilbride
Second to fifth grades

Matilda the Musical is the multi-award winning musical inspired by the children’s novel by Roald Dahl. This musical is the story of an extraordinary girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny! Join this class and explore songs, choreography, and story line as students learn the fundamentals of musical theater!  Class time will be devoted to vocal training and character work along with choreography to bring this story to life!

Students Ages 8-18 who cannot attend a Thursday night class, but would like to be eligible to audition for our spring production of School of Rock, may take the online course, Critic’s Corner, or may audition for our Improv class that meets on Mondays, however the Improv class is for the seasoned Improv middle schooler or a high school student.

Act 2: 6 grade through 12th grade

Broadway Juke Box
Musical Theatre
Teacher:  Ciara Freeman and Nicole Carpenter
6th grade- 8th grade
6:30 – 8:30 pm

If you love shows featuring music from such Broadway favorites as Mama Mia, We Will Rock You, Rock of Ages, and other shows with music written by pop/rock stars, you won’t want to miss this class!  Students will learn vocal techniques, blocking/choreography, and theater training through these songs. The class will perform in an end of session showcase featuring such Broadway hits!

Musical Theater Master Class
Musical Theatre

6th grade – 12th grade
6:30 – 8:30 pm
Tuition $250 

This Music/Theater class will focus on concentrations of music and theater studies.  Great emphasis will be placed on recognizing the relevance of each discipline as it relates to musical theater and preparing students for auditions and musical theater performances.  Half of each class period will be devoted to vocal development and the other half to improving acting skills.  The culmination of this course will result with students gaining a broader understanding of musical theater from their participation in a fun and exciting musical theater performance experience that will increase their abilities and help them to become well rounded performers. Students will walk away from the class with a monologue and song selection that they will add to their repertoire so they are “audition ready” always as well perform a group number.

Critic’s Corner

Can’t make it to a Thursday night class? Then this class may fit your schedule perfectly, especially if you have you ever wanted to be a critic! This invaluable class gives you the opportunity to do just that. This is a very flexible class and will be handled via e-mail and independent study assignments. This material is not collected or graded and is provided for the student to do with it as they like. Students may choose to see shows or watch movies on their own and then critique and share their ideas. This challenging, yet fun class gives students a firm theatrical foundation. In addition to the independent study aspect of this show, Our Critic’s Corner class has the opportunity to see Matilda the Musical at The Fox on Tuesday, April 18th at 7:30 pm. Due to the high cost of these tickets, each enrolled student will receive one ticket for themselves and may purchase one additional ticket for a chaperone and tickets must be requested by January 20th. Students must have their own transportation and will meet at the seats. Contact Connie Matthews,cmatthews@cytatlanta.com, if you have any questions.  Students who prefer, may attend a local high school production as an option and will receive two complimentary tickets for the student and chaperone.  Show, dates, and time will be provided as an option at the start of the class.

Students must email cmatthews@cytatlanta.com to request and reserve tickets for Matilda the Musical by January 20th to receive complimentary ticket with the class.

Improv

This is an AUDITION ONLY class (Auditions are Wednesday, January 11th from 6:30-8:00 pm in the choir room at Mount Pisgah UMC- this is a workshop format and for students who have Improv experience or are in High School) and will be limited to a handful of students who will create our Improv Team!  Led by Shaun Manny, our team will meet on Mondays at Mount Pisgah UMC from 6:30-8:00 pm on the following dates:

January 23, 30
February 6, 13, 27
March 20, 27
Showcase: Thursday, March 30th, 6:30 pm
April 10

Register online for this class prior to auditions and if you are not placed in the class you can move into another class of your choice.

In addition, there will be a workshop with guest teachers from Dad’s Garage on a Sunday in April/May that works for most everyone and Dad’s Garage is planning a local Improv event that we can participate in! There will be additional team practice time in preparation for the event.

Cost: $250

Additional T-shirt expense of $20 if participate in Improv event

Students who audition for the session’s production are not eligible for a class refund but may transfer to another class if there is space available.
